Here are some of the upcoming opportunities to volunteer at New York City Audubon.

Prospect Park Breeding Bird Census
Last Year, NYC Audubon took a breeding bird census in Central Park to document changes over the last ten years. This year we need your help in Brooklyn. If you are able to be a surveyor or fill-in for a small time or assist in this important research in other ways, please let us know! We will follow the Cornell Breeding Bird Census methodology as used in past studies.

Taking pictures of fast moving five inch birds is a rewarding experience.  Of course, it takes a lot of time, patience and perseverance to truly capture our beautiful Neo-tropical migrants. Avoiding Ticks

Because some of our photo tours bring us into areas where ticks reside, here are some precautions you can take to minimize your risk. 
 
1.Wear light colored clothing so that if a tick gets on you it’s easily seen.
 
2.Tuck your pants into your socks.
 
3.Spray yourself with a 30% DEET solution. Never spray indoors. Spray away from your vehicle and wipe your hands before handling your camera or binoculars.

Now that summer's here again let's take a look at the "sunny16" rule. This works between 10 am andActive Image 4 pm on a summer’s day.

The sunny sixteen rule states that, on a sunny summer’s day between the hours of 10 am and 3 pm, at f/16 your shutter speed will equal your ISO. Half your shutter speed will equal double your f-stop. Double your aperture will equal half your shutter speed, etc., etc.

Active Image The April meeting of the Camera Club that was  held on Tuesday, April 21, was Member's Night where members submitted up to five examples of their work. Members voted on the entries with top honors going to Helen Pine's photograph of a Northern Gannet in flight. Second prize went to Avi Lewis and third prize was won by Stephen Feingold . If you're like me, vast numbers of catalogs start arriving in late October and early November, filling my mailbox and recycling bin to capacity.
